Most likely, Windows XP deleted them from the desktop because you hadn't used some of them for a while. Isn't it nice of Microsoft to care about us so much?
Right-click your desktop. Then click Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. Now you can either restor the default or you can pick the ones you want restored.

A few things to try:
Just refresh the icon cache by deleting the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data)
Right click on the desktop, choose properties and click on "Customize Desktop". Internet Explorer, Recycle Bin, My Documents and/or My Network Places can be added or removed here
Download TweakUI
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
You'll find the download link on the right side, download and run the icon fix

I have had that problem and this is the best way i know how to tell you to get it all fixed,no matter what anyone tells you,at least once every 6 months or a year you just have to reboot your computer to get rid of the problems and microsoft offers to fix it for you while you do a reboot but dont let them fix anything you have to keep selecting that you want to do a complete reboot, or you wont be able to have everthing the way that it used to be !A complete reboot of windows xp will get rid of alot of problems and your computer will work like new again i have done it many times over time. it is the only way just make sure you write down things that you want to keep for later to reinstall, and all license numbers and sites that you want to remember. it takes some work but you can do it in a day easy! And you will be glad you did and if you dont know for sure how to do a complete reboot ,take it to someone who does: and let them do it for ya !well that is all I know to help resolve your problem ,you can get icons back if you unistall each program and reinstall it again that is one way ,but your computer is having problems! so just do a reboot !!!!!!!!!!!hope that helps!!!!!!!!! over and out and good luck

You should be able to boot up in Safe Mode. While the PC is in the early stages of starting up start pressing the F10 key, and this will take you to a very DOS menu, asking you if you would like to start up in Safe Mode. Arrow down and hit enter. The PC will start up in this "Fix-It mode" where some functions won't be available. It is simply up and running to allow you to fix whatever is wrong. At this point, I would suggest you run Viral and Spyware

Go to start, control panel, display, customise desktop, then click on "Defaults". That should restore your icons. Also, be sure that you have display my desktop as web page option enabled, and that you have not clicked on the "Hide Icons" box. I hope this helps.

hit F8 at startup and try last known good configuration. If that doesn't work try running a SFC /scannow in command prompt to check your system files for corruption, you might need your OS CD handy. If still no good backup and clean install the OS..
