Can Playstation 2 (PS2) online games be played on the Playstation 3 (PS3)?

I just got about 30 new PS2 games from ebay, and I have never owned a Playstation before. Now that they are cheaper, I thought I would give it a try. I got a PS3, and I was wondering if I can still go online and play those online PS2 games with the PS3? Thanks for your responses!

Most likely, but Ps2 online games are weak.

No, they cannot. Only those designed for 3 will play.
