It depends how bad the cold is! In most cases, it's better to just take a lot of fluids and wait for it to pass. If the mother is really, miserable, though, she should take an over the counter formula that does not contain codeine or more than 5% alcohol.

Nyquil, my personal favourite, is out.

A little Vicks Vaporub on the chest, a hot bath, an ibuprofin and lots of soup really is the best course of treatment...as long as it's combined with a father who gets up with the baby at night.

A good rule of thumb is that if it is available in a pediatric dose, it is ok to take. Don't take meds with alcohol in them (better to be safe). I would stick with pseudofed, guafenisen, and dextromethorphen (which I'm sure I've butchered the spelling of!)

A great book to guide you is "Medications and Mother's Milk" by Thomas Hale. He devotes his life to the study of which medications cross over in the milk and to what degree.

When in doubt, consult a physician.

My doctor always told me to take sudifed...but that was almost 10 years ago. You might want to give the doctor's office a call and ask what over the counter stuff you can take.
