I used the search terms "letter sealing waxes and stamps" on the YAHOO search engine and came up with 516 search related "answers". It seems there's a large number of online businesses that sell this wax and a variety of generic, specialized, and uniquely fashioned seals if you desire to use the wax for sealing letters in a personalized way. Here is a link to one of the online businesses that sell the wax:

Hope this helps.

They just used candles. People usually had a personalized ring that had a symbol they would set in the wax so it could not be broken without the receiver of the letter knowing.

I would think candles will do ... then just find a stamp you'd like to press the wax with ... I wouldn't spend the extra money (they do charge more) on pretty little kit for something basic like this (I doubt wax would be hot enough to melt a rubber stamp but if you didn't feel sure or don't care for the results then go find a leather stamp to do the wax impression) even Walmart had leather punch alpabet stamps. look in craft stores (I use them for making resin/clay objects)

you will need to go to a specialty book store...you know..the ones that deal in old and rare books...if they don't have it, they will surely know where to get it.
As well, they will have a collection or know where to get a collection of the seals used..they are very cool, I have several myself and I get the wax at a book store here in Thunder Bay, Ontario
Candles will NOT do, because the new "no-drip" candles are wax with different properties...and are too hard a wax

On old candles? Don't waste money buying special wax ok, it's all the same. Just light a candle, hold it over where you want the wax to drop and you'r done, for free(ish)!

Those red colored ones?
If you live in the U.S, there's a pretty famous shop called Antiqua (or something). They sell those wax. You can find the shop in a lot of shopping centres,
If you don't live in the U.S, I'd suggest an antique shop or a candle shop.
