You can use ear plugs. There are special ones for flying or you can use just regular foam ones. All of these are available at most large drug stores. Try yawning as well - gum and stuff doesn't work for me, either, but yawning does so it may be worth trying. But definitely check out ear plugs - they help. (But remember, nothing will totally elliminate this, just decrease the problem.)

Buy some over the counter nose drops or spray like Afrin and use right before you embark. Chew gum. Suck on Hall's cough drops. Just keep your sinus passages clear. Do you know how to val-salva. ? That is clear your eustachian tubes. You do that by holding your breath and pinching your nostrils shut. Then blow. (But keep your mouth shut). Your ears will clear. The flight attendant can demonstrate.

As soon as the cabin begins to pressurize, try holding your nostrils closed with your hands and try to blow out of your nose. Do this occasionally during the flight and especially on descent.

Chew gun, and keep chewing. Trying to yawn helps my ears sometimes.

Good Luck, that can hurt BAD!
