You should begin solids around 4-6 months. Start out with just one solid feeding per day, and gradually increase over the next few months. Around 8-10 months, you can start giving finger foods. As baby gets better at eating table food, you can then gradually decrease the baby food.

Solid foods are started around 6 months of age, when baby is showing all the signs of readiness. They really can't digest it much earlier than that. Starting solids prior to 6 mos of age can bring increased risks of allergies, diabetes and obesity.

At first, it's really only a few spoonfulls. Solids foods during the first year are really mostly for fun and practice. Formula or breastmilk should continue to be the main source of nutrition.

Bananas, avocados and sweet potatoes are the best first foods.
