Most midwives actually recommend eating and drinking in labor. Light things like broths, jello, popsicles, fruits, Gatorade, etc. are considered good. This helps you keep your energy up so that you can make it through labor easier. You wouldn't run a marathon without eating and drinking for energy and hydration, right?
The idea that you can't eat and drink in labor comes from when it was very common for mothers to be knocked unconscious while birthing. ("Twilight sleep.") If mom should need to go under general anesthesia for an emergency c/s, there is a slight chance of aspiration.
With a vaginal birth, you can eat as soon as you feel like it after the birth. For my hospital birth, my nurse brought me a box meal after I had finished nursing for the first time, so just a couple of hours afterwards. For my second, born in a free-standing birth center, I ate breakfast maybe 8-10 hours later. My third was a homebirth and my midwife gave me a snack within about 30 minutes of her birth.
Not sure what rules might apply after a c/s.

You shouldnt eat if you are having a c section in case you need a general anaesthetic, plus birth can be painful so you may feel more comfortable on an empty stomach. After a c section you have to wait until the next day to have fluids, they usually give IV fluids until then. You are then allowed to eat a light diet and gradually get back to normal as your bowel movements return (i.e you pass wind and open your bowels)

yes eat. physically birth is compared to running a marathon, would you do that deprived of what you need for stamina and endurance? eat what you feel like, you may puke it up so be warned on that. and if you are going to the hospital to birth, eat before you get there because they will not let you eat or drink while in labor.
better yet, stay home and birth, no one telling you what you can or can not eat or drink, no one telling you to push(yes your body will know when its time with out anyone telling it) no one telling you you cant vocalize, no one telling you you cant bathe or shower...whole lot more to think about there

I ate immediately after giving birth........I'd had my husband get me taco bell the night before and had a chicken soft taco at 5 am. They just dont want you eating before because the anesthesia can make you throw up.

I DON'T KNOW OF ANY RULE ABOUT NOT EATING FOOD OF THE DAY OF YOUR C-SECTION. IF IT IS DONE UNDER GENERAL SEDATION- THEN YOU SHOULD GO THERE WITH EMPTY STOMACH- NOT EATING SINCE THE PREVIOUS NIGHT. WHEN I GAVE BIRTH TO MY SON(A C-SECTION) THEY GAVE US FOOD ON THE THIRD DAY AFTER THE C-SECTION. BUT THE LAST THING YOU WIL THINK ABOUT IS FOOD AFTER THE C-SECTION. IT HURTS LIKE HELL AFTERWARDS.

Usually with any planned surgery, you should cease all eating and drinking by 8 pm at night, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, which is who you really should direct this question to. Good luck with your baby!
