The large evergreen southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) bears giant 6-8" flowers in spring in the south. There are also many hybrid varieties of magnolia, that are not evergreen and are hardy further north. They are usually either various shades of pink (from very pale to almost red) or white, but there are a few hybrid yellow ones too. There's a whole club dedicated to them. The link to the Magnolia Society is below.

Magnolia is a nice warm neutral colour that will go with most colours. Have a look for household magazines that might show you the trends of the next season. Browns, coffees and earthly tones were in last year and are still popular now.

Hallways tend to be a bit narrow, if you go with a dark colour, it will close the walls in on top of you.
Why not do it all in magnolia, with white trim on skirting boards, and use artwork to add colour.
Add a big mirror if you can too - great for bouncing whatever natural light there is around to make it seem brighter.

Anything, that's why all buildings start off as builder's magnolia, then it doesn't matter what colour furniture you have. What else have you got in the hallway that you need to coordinate with?
