What does "good" life mean? Fun? Righteous? I'm not sure what you mean by serious either - for example I would say a pro-football player is serious when it comes to the game but he still has fun playing it.

I think a person can be serious - in the sense that they are responsible, have plans for the future, ... - and still enjoy life. Being serious doesn't mean that you only see the negative things.

Personally, I think that if you live your entire life sober without being able to let your hair down so to speak and have some good old fashioned fun, then the quality of life must be horrible.

True that life can't be all play and no work but at the same token it can't be all work and no play.

But without having that play time, scientifically you risk health problems. Laughter for example releases endorphins and endorphins give you a feeling of well being. However, to live life completely serious and sober, you run the risk of depression, and health ailments.

Studies prove for example that a man who getgs up in the morning, and gets a kiss in the morning on his way out the door by his wife will live longer than a man who gets up in the morning and just goes about his business clockwork.

I don't think so. Some people would describe me as a "serious" guy. Some have even suggested that I'm a "perfectionist," but I assure you, I'm neither of those.

It's all a matter of relativity. To THEM, in contrast to their philosophy and habits, I may "seem" more serious, but that's all it is.

And far from being "perennially dissatisfied," I'm very satisfied with my life and my achievements.

And I also know many people who seem to be constantly "happy," but I also know that those people are quite "serious" about performing their job with integrity and detail.

In my opinion, humor & laughter make life better on every level.
But I know people who seem so serious all the time. But they get
a great deal of joy from thier accomplishments. While it may seem that they are always serious they are smiling inside.
I do agree however that some serious people are just unhappy with thier lives. You are the only one who can change your life but if you never try or never ask for help it can get very dark and lonely. Look around. You may find more good than you expect

Being serious is OK and also very good. Being light and having silly fun is OK and also very good. I believe the question is what is the right balance of fun and seriousness for each one of us? Of cousre, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy is still true.

There are degrees. Seriousness (as in, the only thing that matters is winning) is one criterion by which James Carse distinguishes "Finite and Infinite Games." In talking about death he says (in contrast to the seriousness of finite play), "the joy of infinite play, its laughter, is in learning to start something you cannot finish."

I think we must be serious when we need to but if we don't have to, just relax and be yourself. But I do believe that if you life a very serious life, you are about to life a stressful life and when life is stressful, you won't enjoy it and life will be short because you are always angry.
