Do you think had Syd not taken acid and other such drugs that we would even know him or pink floyd? He started something amazing and it was from his influence of the drugs. I think he was a martyr. May he r.i.p. What are your thoughts?

well first off, syd took LSD which was a drug used in the army to make their prisoners dilusional. i think that when he and waters founded the band, they wanted to become famous and what everyone was doing back then was getting high and then writing some non sensical yet brilliant song. i mean, look at lucy in the sky with diamonds. the beatles must've been stoned out of their minds when they wrote that but it's still one of my favourites. anyway, the first album piper at the gates of dawn was really all of these random amazing songs that probably were written while they were seriously high. take bike for example. it makes no sense, it's totally random but yet it's fun and captures the childlike side of rock 'n roll.
so i guess the answer to your question would be that without durgs, however horrid they may be for you, these amazing songs and bands wouldn't exist.

and syd is indeed a martyr. shine on you crazy diamond.

I do not think that Syd Barrett's acid and drug intake had anything to do with his musical mind. Music is a gift of nature. As also reading.Syd Barrett was gifted by both. That can be heard in his rendering of Joyce's lyrics [ `Lean out of your window/Golden hair..'/Iheard you singing...'].
