I don't think one supplier could handle the enormous appetite the US has with oil. I am afraid if we don't start conservation and seeking new energy sources we may have to buy oil from the man in the moon.

The USA produces 10% of the Petroleum on the World market and uses 40%. If The USA invaded Venezuela it could get all the Petroleum it needs from there.
Petroleum dominated the economy of Venezuela throughout the twentieth century. In 1989 the petroleum industry provided almost 13 percent of the GDP, 51 percent of government revenues, and 81 percent of exports. Before the sharp drop in international oil prices in the 1980s, these ratios were considerably higher. From 1929 to 1970, the year of the country's peak production, Venezuela was the world's largest exporter of petroleum. In 1990 the country ranked as the third leading oil exporter, after Saudi Arabia and Iran, and contained at least 7 percent of proven world oil reserves.

To start with, America doesn't buy oil as a country, and we don't typically buy it from other governments. Stop thinking in nationalistic terms. Individuals and private companies buy oil from various places around the world because they choose to. They buy where they can get good prices or get dependable sources. Anyway, it ought to be our right to buy oil from whoever we want to. Can I assume your goal is to set up laws to prevent us from buying oil where we choose to? Why? What possible benefit could it bring?
Beyond that, it is impractical to put all your eggs in one basket. If we become overly dependent on one nation, aren't we in a worse situation than we are now?

US gets dictator governments into power around the globe. These governments sell us oil cheap. Most of the revenue of oil goes to government in form of taxes. Take a look at Exxon's 10-K annual filings and see the details of their cost of production. We sell arms to these governments in return.
It's all about the money. And we don't care, we have to go to work, take care of our families, go to the mall, and listen to our ipods. We have no time to address these issues to government because we would not see any immediate results.

It won't be possible. You want to be at the mercy of a monopoly, then get it only from one source. If that single source collapses, then what? Where are you going to get the supply?
