Well it sounds like you have a well rounded and varied area of interests. So I don't think anyone with any kind of understanding of the word 'geek' could possibly call you a geek. Don't listen to them. A Geek is someone, say a Computer Geek, who spends all his/her time on the computer, knows absolutely everything there is to know about them, talks continually about them, and isn't interested in anything but computers. You are not, by any means a geek.

Personally, I use the title geek proudly. I think you are a geek if you say you are one. But mostly it is just a stereotype. The characteristics of a geek were just kind of chosen and developed over time. I think a lot of people like the term now and wear it proudly. Here's a humorous chart that many Geeks know of. We make fun of ourselves: http://www.brunching.com/geekhierarchy.html

Using a computer used to make you a geek, but now so many people do that it's not really a characteristic anymore. To be a computer geek you have to use linux.

But I agree. Just knowing a lot about computers doesn't make you a geek, not anymore.

The stereotypical geeky things in the world are:

Science fiction
Comic books
video games (nintendo is the geekiest, then playstation, and X box is the least geeky. That's because nintendo is the best and X box is for jocks)
anime
an obsession with japanese culture in general
Roleplaying games
Being obsessed with Lord of the RIngs
Being obsessed with Harry Potter

And you can always create your own kind of geek. For example, I went to culinary school and call myself a "food geek", though I am also a traditional geek because I'm a gamer.

I think to be REALLY REALLY geeky, your geekiness has to majorly affect your social life. Then you are a super geek.

Boy, you really seem upset that people call you a geek. Don't worry, you're not, but it's not something to be offended by. Us geeks have geek pride.

To me, someone who has a good grasp of technology so that they can use it to accomplish other things is not a geek, but someone who is into the technology for technology's sake is. I spend far more time on the computer than you do, apparently, and I would certainly NOT consider myself to be a geek, because I couldn't care less about how the technology works, just that it allows me to accomplish the tasks I choose to do in my daily life.
