189,000 long metric tons of coal and 137,320 long metric tons of iron. In order to keep the coal mines from flooding, James Watt invented the steam engine to drive de-watering pumps for the mines. The introduction of the steam engine to drive mills made Britain the worlds leader in textile production and Britain became an urban society.
