There is always hot tea with lots of lemon and honey. It is the lemon and honey plus the warmth that does it, not the tea. My Mom used to make hot lemonade for me. Same thing but water instead of tea. Depending on the type of sore throat, sometimes standing over steaming water helps. I guess that depends on the child's age. The pectin in apples soothes a sore throat. There are lozenges on the market called breezers from Halls I think that are nothing but pectin. So try apple sauce, or try this. Slice the top off an apple so that looking down on it you can see the core surrounded by fruit. Now take a spoon and scrape around and around the fruit part. You will get something that is like applesauce, but with no preservatives or sugar. I thing it is better for the child and the throat that way. It is a very smooth sauce if you do it right, takes a little practice. Sometimes a Popsicle will help numb the throat. I hope your child feels better soon.

I have always used these home remedies:
* Gargling with warm, salt water
* Drinking lemon tea with honey (honey is an anti-oxident)
* Drinking chamomile tea
* Caynenne Powder which is a spice and water. Take one teaspoon to 2 tablespoons in a glass of water of the Cayenne powder and mix it with a glass of water and gargle every 2 hours twice each time. If your child accidently swallows some of it, it actually does some good, no harm. Just tell him/her to brush his teeth afterwards otherwise it can hurt the teeth. It clears up a sore throat really fast as in the next day.
I'm sure I could find some info somewhere on the net, to reasure you...here one is: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/34546/cure_yourself_with_cayenne_pepper.html

Cepacol works great and it can be found in a lozenge or in a spray (if the child is too young and could choke on pills). Also, my mom used to give me Vernor's when I was little (you're from Detroit so I'm sure you know what that is and where to get it) to break up any phelgm that was causing my throat to hurt (and kids love it). Of course, there is always really expensive Robatussin for sore throats, but I would hate spending money on that. Children's tylenol might be a good idea, but it doesn't always help. Give it to your child and see how he/she responds. And if you aren't planning on taking your child to the doctor, keep looking at his/her stomach and chest for a red blotchy rash, because that will indicate that your child has scarlet fever (the second stage of strep throat). If you see a rash, take your child to the doctor right away.

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Shaved ice. If you don't have an ice shaver, then put a little water in your blender and add ice cubes. You can even freeze the ice cube trays for different flavors - - like for Koolaid or orange juice. Put in it a cup or bowl and give them a spoon.
It doesn't make the sore throat go away - - -but it sure eases the pain until they feel better.

the best thing I've found is two pain killers if its a young child then calpol. this eases the sourness when thy cough or swallow. also it helps keep bacteria at bay. it works ever time. sucking sweets, taking medicine for sore throats only coats the throats for a while then stops working.

Ask your pharmacist if you can give the child zinc lozenges (unless s/he is very young and could choke on it). It could be strep throat though so keep an eye on it.

talk to the pharmasist about any medication to give him... if it lasts for a while longer then take him to the doctor because it could be strep throat or something along those lines.
Keep him comforatable by having him suck on popsicles, or ice.
