Not just Liszt ... all of the great composers laid the foundation for everything we hear and play today! Their chord progressions and melodies are still being played ... by modern instruments everyday.

What Chopin pronounced approximately Liszt's music: "He seems on the celebrities with the aid of an enema tube and clothing them up in tinsel and rags." I surely tend to believe Freddy in this one. sure, Liszt did, in his extreme previous age and in those previous couple of years, have a pang of remorseful approximately and guilt approximately being a shallow composer and flashy showman and did compose some elegantly limited products - of those none (to me) evaluate to the intensity of Chopin. as much as followers rave approximately Liszt, i locate the common innovations 'lite' or slightly frippery, and then iced over with mountains of technical passages that have little or no musical meaning. some everybody is truthfully swayed through gentle breezes. Having pronounced all that, Liszt grew to become into possibly the 1st to handle the piano like a completely symphonic tool, this is of historic noteworthiness. And as customary, while discussing great and bigger composers, loads of this boils all the way down to no longer something better than possibilities. ultimate regards.

I agree with maddog--you can hear a lot of influences of modern music in the classical composers. I think it's easier to hear in piano music, because the percussive nature of the piano lets us hear clearly the rhythms that are the precursors to modern music today. In an orchestra, these rhythms feel muted to me.
