The chemical DNA was discovered, I believe, by Friederich Miescher in Germany about 100 years ago. The proof that it was the genetic material was much later, and by different people. --ProfBill

DNA was first isolated by Friedrich Meishcer who discovered a substance he called a "nuclein" in 1869. In 1929 this discovery was followed by Phoebus Leven's identification of base, sugar and phosphate nucleotide unit.In 1937 William Astbury produced the first X-ray diffraction patterns that showed that DNA had a regular structure. In 1943, Oswald Theodore Avery discovered that traits of the "smooth" form of the Pneumococcus could be transferred to the "rough" form of the same bacteria by mixing killed "smooth" bacteria with the live "rough" form.DNA's role in heredity was confirmed in 1953, when Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase in the Hershey-Chase experiment, showed that DNA is is the genetic material of the T2 phage.Using X-ray diffraction data from Rosalind Franklin and the information that the bases were paired, James D. Watson and Francis Crick produced the first accurate model of DNA structure in 1953 in their article The Molecular structure of Nucleic Acids
So in a nutshell, it means that lot of people had contributed for the discovery of DNA. Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins jointly received the Nobel Prize.

Johan Friedrich Miescher isolated(in 1869) the thread like structure which he precipited by adding chloroform- alcohol mixture. This transparent thread, which he obtained from the nuclei of leucocytes contained in the pus, was called nulein by him. Later one this substance turned out to be DNA. So, the credit of the first discovery of DNA goes to him.
Watson and Crick gave a DNA model.

The discovery of deoxyribonucleic acid, more commonly known as DNA, has been the foundation for much scientific work. This fundamental discovery was credited to James Watson and Francis Crick. Many people believe that another person, Rosalind Franklin, also played a large role in the research. How much did she contribute to the discovery? Why is her name left unrecognized?

The presence of the molecule was first shown in 1868 by Friedrich Miescher, who isolated material he termed nuclein from pus. He later showed it consisted of two parts, one of which was acidic. The nature of this component was worked out by Albrecht Kossel, who first coined the phrase 'nucleic acid'
The basic 3D structure of DNA was determined by Watson and Crick in 1953, using data from several other workers and creating a model that is basically still the one we use today
