Hello all I am 16 weeks and 4 days pregnant and my fundal height is now at my belly button which is usually I thought around 20 weeks stage. I have had 5 previous pregnancies and am a high risk pregnancy due to high bmi. What causes this and do I need to see a midwife or should I just wait till my next scheduled appointment? Thanks in advance.

at 18 weeks my fundal height was 22cm by the time i reached 40 weeks it was 47 cm. my midwife always said it was either a monster baby or just a bit too much of mum as im on the wrong side of size 12, baby was actually 8lb 8 oz so i'll go with the too much mum theory.

You could have a bigger baby, more fluid. Being over weight you may not be able to measure accurately. The measuring of the uterus is only a guide. I went to the doctor this week 33 weeks 6 days, my fundus height is 41, it has grown 6 cm in 3 weeks. I am ment to be having a bigger baby, but up until 20 weeks my fundus height was normal and baby was about average size till 30 weeks. This is my 4th pregnancy and for some reason my fundus height has been bigger then is ment too.
Because my fundus height was bigger I had to do the diabetes screening test twice and had 2 extra ultrasounds to check babies size. I dont think you need to see midwife before next appointment, being a little bigger shouldnt affect baby. I would call your midwife if you are really concerned.

Hi, I was measuring 4cm-6cm "too big" with my little boy when they measured my fundal height and they scanned me 7 times cos they thought they had my dates wrong, suspected gestational diabetes etc! Don't worry, as long as you feel ok in yourself etc, you are just having a big one! my little boy was 9lb14oz! two wks early! I'm 15 weeks pregnant again and the sane thing is happening. with second babies you show much earlier, I have a big bump already! Best of luck, mention it to your midwife next time you see her tho.

I measured big with both my kids, with the first pregnancy the midwives kept telling me I was putting on too much weigt but then I had an 11lb baby so they took it more seriously next time - see your midwife if you continue to measure big they can do an extra scan towards the end of your pregnancy to estimate the size of baby - its not particularly accurate but it can be an indication of what to expect. Good Luck!!

There are many reasons for a high measurement. Twins or more could be a cause. Lots of fluid, a large baby, or a larger than "normal" uterus.
I was also measuring bigger until the baby dropped
Good luck.

having had 5 children i got bigger each time as of course the babies got bigger too but it may also be down to the way the baby is laying but if your worried a quick trip to your midwife is in order

It could merely be the way your baby is lying. Your big ultrasound where they measure the baby will probably show the size you expect based on your due date.

it could just be because, you stomach musles are stretched due to having 5 children so each time they get weaker and each time your bump gets bigger, i wouldn't worry too much as every one is different, the size of the baby would be too much of a worry unless it was too small.
