For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.
If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.
Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.

I like AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)
And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

I have been using Kaspersky for about 15 months now & I have to say it is second to none compared to any other AV I have ever used(Ive used AVG Norton, Macafee, Panda, NOD and PC Cillin before)
It is notable by its silence because it updates itself, checks webpages & emails itself without the user having to do anything (pretty much). Its also light on the resources.
If you decide to go with others go with Panda or AVG. I wouldnt recommend Macafee or Norton.
The link below should help

AVG Free. It is popular, easy to use, regular update will ensure you no virus in your computer. Also, the scanner is fast, and it takes only 10 mins to scan my whole PC. Lastly, it is awarded by CNet and one of the most downloaded at www.download.com, it is also free with no time limitation. You can download it at www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition or www.grisoft.com
