For one thing, study the works of people you admire. Look up the history of graphic arts in libraries, not just on the Internet. Remember that only a relatively small portion of our entire heritage has so far been reduced to pixels.

If you can afford to, a college course in graphic arts and in fine arts would be appropriate. It's not just creative ideas, after all, but techniques, mastery of the tools and materials (nowadays probably almost all computer stuff), and an appreciation of how the masters have made it work.

And there are masters in graphic arts just as there are in "fine" arts. There are the people who got it right so completely that what would otherwise just be commercial ephemera has lasted. Generally, they are the ones who most completely captured the feel of their age; their decade, their generation.

For one example, Peter Max practically defined the sixties.
