When I was young, and lacking in wisdom concerning relationships with the opposite sex. I made several terrible mistakes. When a man older than me, came into my life, I did not listen to the teachings of my mother any more. I started to listen to this man. I believed he loved me, and wanted to take care of me. When he later deceived me, and broke my heart, I tried to committ an awful act to myself. I thought I really loved him, and could not live with out him. My family was so hurt by the fact that I did tell them, and tried to hurt myself. My mother cried for days, and it messed up our relationship.
I was so scared to talk to my mother, and I would rather end my life than hurt her. But this was so wrong, for my family would of been worse off, If I had followed through.
My family had to work through my mistakes, and it took awhile to heal. Hurting yourself does hurt all who love you. No one wants a loved one to die, let alone end their life purposely.
I learned that, and I will never forget it either.
To this day, I try to help all I can to see that life is of true value, and even though times are hard out there. With the help of God, and our family we can make it through the hurt.

Conversely, doing something good or extraordinary also has its impact - a welcome one - on the people around you... An achievement accomplished by you, a laurel earned, etc adds to the pride and joy of your people... family and friends..
But the rule always has its exceptions, for example, your adversaries / competitors may be happy if something bad you do for yourself... and feel bad if you achieve anything great...
This is just common observation and I don't know if psychology has a reason for this phenomenon ... But I can tell you something interesting from the spiritual field of the Hindus... Not just the act, even a thought of one person has an impact on the other(s)...
Sri Paramahamsa Yogananda (Self Realization Fellowship founder in the US) writes in his "Auto biography of a Yogi" about how "every wayside flower is symbol of someone's willing smile, and every biting mosquito, of someone's biting word..."
A story in the Indian epics also throws some interesting view on this... It is about how a king and a business man (trading in woods) were friends and how due to sudden fall in the business, the latter had an unfortunate thought that if only the king died, he would be able to supply large amount of sandal wood to the palace (to cremate the king's body) and make good his loss... About the same time, the king found himself caught with hostile feelings toward his friend (businessman) for no reason... He immediately called his friend and told about his sudden bad thought to him.. and the businessman also confessed of his own undeserved evil thought... The story was told by a hermit (spiritual aspirant) to his students, according to the epic, to drive home the impact of seemingly secret thoughts on the people concerned..!

My son cuts and is suicidal. I suffer all the way with him. If he cuts I hurt in the heart because I can,t help him. When he attempts suicide I am absolutely distraught because I can,t make his life happy.
If you care about a person family or friend you feel a lot of pain in the heart or grieve because you want to help them but feel so useless.
I feel lucky now because I have been able to get my son the appropiate help and at the moment everything is going ok, but tomorrow could be different. I just try to be there for him and help when he wants or needs help.
BUT I can assure you it HURTS but I don,t blame him he can't help it. I would never tell him how much I hurt because it would only cause him more stress.

I see that alot of big examples were covered in the answers before me... but here is a simple example. There is a girl at work who is quite thin (probably a size 3) and she is always complaining about how she needs to lose weight and saying that she is fat. What she doesn't understand is that she is by far the smallest person around, and when she says those comments most of the women around her begin to feel worse about their bodies than they already do. So by criticising herself so openly, she is hurting the women around her.

It impacts you. the effects could be formidable or they could be subtle besides the undeniable fact that it impacts you. The formidable effects are probable going to be uncommon, yet you could locate in line with risk a million% to 5% who act out like the lyrics interior the music. This small share is going to go out and attempt to be the gangsta that they pay attention approximately interior the music. some every person is extra gullible than others. maximum folk will view it as entertainment, even with the shown fact that it nevertheless will impact them in extra subtle strategies. case in point; a woman might settle for her guy calling her a '*****' or a 'ho' extra easily because of the fact she thinks he's purely getting it from the Rap music lifestyle, and that is risk unfastened. at times, she could be suited. yet in different circumstances, this might make her a lot extra in all probability to fall into an abusive relationship than she might have if she became exposing herself to music with extra useful lyrical messages. that is form of like eating junk nutrition vs. healthful nutrition. some people might have fairly certainly healthful constitutions to the place they might consume an excellent variety of junk nutrition, and it would not effect them at an obscenely undesirable point, mutually as people with weaker constitutions might finally end up weighing 500 pounds and dying from a heart attack because of the fact of eating junk nutrition. yet in the two case the two people could have been extra effective off eating extra healthy nutrition.
