the screen has frozen and i think the built in battery is dead. how do i get access to the battery.

Reset it pushing a small pin into the tiny hole below the power/lock button. That may work, if it didn't you'd need to take the player to the dealer to replace the battery.

Plug it into the computer to charge it. If that doesn't work, press the reset button then plug it into the computer.
