Roots are numbers that satisfy the solution of the equation.

a square is a number multiplied by itsself.

Example

3 x 3 = 9

Square root is a non-negative real number call the princial square root.

Square roots of integers that are not perfece squares are always irrational numbers.

Example

√2 = 1.414213562 . . . Irrational

√9 = 3. . . Perfect square

3 x 3 = 9

The characer √ is called a radical

The number inside the radical √49 is called the radicand

Root is the opposite of exponentiation. If you have 3^2=9 then SQRT(9) is 3. Another important thing about the root is the fact that roots can be represented as exponentiation in this way:

SQRT(9) = 9^0.5

This characteristic shows that root and exponentiation is the same operation. The only difference is the fact that SQRT has not an integer exponent.

The term "root" in mathematics generally means the solution of an equation. The specific terms "square root", "cube root", "fourth root", "nth root" etc define quantities which, when raised to the specified power, produce the number given. For example, "the cube root of 125" means the number which when raised to power 3 produces 125 (ie 5). The symbol you used, on its own, means square root; to indicate a root of a higher degree the symbol is embellished with the relevant number.
