The depth of the pacific ocean varies considerably depending on where you are. If you are close or far away from the ocean ridges or if you are in the trench (the contact of the oceanic plate with the continental plate). The deepest part are in the trench as it has been said and the shallowest are in the ridge. About 3,500 m is the depth of the "flat" bottom of the sea 3 days south of Panama. But like I said it varies considerably. The accepted average is about 4,300 meters. There are several methods to measure the depth. The most common is by sonar (sound waves propagating through the water reflected in the ocean floor and back to the ship. Other technique is by measuring directly with steal tubes before drilling. IODP (former ODP) has been drilling the ocean for almost 40 years and they have measured directly the depth of the ocean at several (about a hundred) places, as well as coring, measuring the chemical composition of the rocks and sea water.

Its average depth is 4,637 meters (2.8 miles). It is home to the deepest known point in the ocean — the Mariana Trench off Guam — which plunges to a depth of about 11,000 meters (nearly 7 miles). Because of the depth of the Pacific Ocean, tsunamis (waves created by earthquakes) can reach speeds of 750 kilometers an hour, the same velocity as a jet airplane.

the depth of the pacific ocean has been measured using many instruments.......i.e scientifically
but not really manually by diving into them, due to its depth which may even resuls in fatal result if it is done ....
because , the ocean itself exerts its pressure over us as we travel more and more deep(E.G IN MARIANA TRENCH, the deepest part in the pacific ocean and in the world as well) we go inside the ocean....
but , see the nature's miracle, there are many other creatures which can swim smoothly ,normally even at such depth...
