In general, the AMD Athlon 64 dual core 3800 series will outperform the Intel Pentium D series. However, the most capable versions of the Pentium D offer higher performance than the least powerful versions of the AMD 3800 processors.

For specific comparisons of the various models within each series, go to Tom's Hardware Guide and look at the current CPU Charts. The Price/Performance benchmark option is especially helpful in determining the best value for the money.

Of those two, the Athlon is the faster processor. However, you should look at Intel's Core 2 Duo offerings as the Pentium D is no longer Intel's flagship model.

AMD is way better than intel especially for gaming and using multiple application at the same time.

The athlon is a more powerful chip because it is duel core. If you are only using it for word processing, e - mails, internet use and other basic office use the intel would do a good job as well. They are both powerful chips.

The Intel has the jump on the AMD, but you can't go wrong either way.
