The most harmful of attitudes that can prevail human spirit can come from two types of thinking: firstly it is idealisation in thinking in search of Truth, Beauty, Justice and Love in their purest form; and secondly when people fall flat at the feet of subjective realism, when people strive to grasp at the reality of everything in view.
The later way of thinking is more common, especially in western thinking. It can rip people of their ability to transcend and seek elevation of spirit following rational attitudes too hard in their minds and therefore their reasons for acting in a certain particular way. People who seek reasons in everything might not true understand the value of human love, compassion and sacrifice. We all need to be able to realise that there is more to all things than we can ever understand. People might not see any reason if and when they find themselves unhappy, and thus in their efforts of find happiness and reason to go with it, might drive themselves too deep into their rational pursuits to cause all hope to drains away – as hopefulness in this case would appear to defy all reason.
The former of these two ways is most illusive and hard to rectify situation without going through painful processes of hardships and sufferings in a real life. If someone is lucky then that person could find a way to realise the supreme illusions of all things good in their lives. Religion for example, can offer a very sound and commonly recognisable ways for this purpose. One can have notions of an ideal life based upon illusions of absolute goodness, absolute Love, Justice, Beauty and Purity, but if these universal qualities of human nature are not realised into a person’s life according to available capacity and therefore shared with fellow human beings than the ultimate result could be a total apathy for life as it is known and regarded by common people. Such a person could stay in illusions, deluded and unable to appreciate what life is all about and why people around get so easily happy and excited about simple things life.
The attitude that supports human spirits in not subjective to any for of philosophical, intellectual or personal considerations. We need to see things in their own peculiar ways and reproduce what they find in a form that would earn us the fulfilment of all our needs – the need for food, shelter, company, social approbation and self-actualisation.
The most valuable of all human abilities is the ability to form and express one’s own opinions about all things encountered in life; and not being able to do this will only lead to isolation and misconceptions. I think therefore I am, but what I am mostly depends upon who I am in relation to where I am and who I am with, then come the consideration about what I am here for – the purpose in living.

From a philosophical perspective, the term "Inherent" refers to the absolute nature of a thing. Thus, an "Inherently self destructive" act is one that is objectively and absolutely aimed at the annihilation of the "self."
I would argue that no such thing exists. An act "may" be self destructive, but only in a subjective sense; but that doesn't prove the act "in itself" is inherently self-destructive.
Here are two people who choose to end their lives. One person simply hates existence and wants to end it. THAT is "self-destructive." The other person also chooses to end his life. He dives on an explosive device to save the lives of his comrades. He chooses to end his life; but far from this being an act of annihilation, it is an act of life affirmation.
Consequently, destruction or affirmation is not contained in the action, but the motive for engaging in the action. And thus, there is no such thing as an "Inherently" self-destructive act.
Hope this answer helps. Cheers, mate.

There has been research that self destructive behaviour is connected with brain chemistry - particularly serotonin levels.
I see it in 2 ways:
Either one does things because they feel good regardless of the effect on one's social, emotional or physical health. Labels such as mental illness or personality disorders come to mind. Nevertheless, some of the greatest artists fit into this category.
Or, one behaves self-destructively because of low self worth - again, maybe because of illness or some disorder.
The worst aspect of it is the consequences - which self-destructiveness ignores, on the innocent, especially those who love the person and suffer as they see them decay.

Peace is created and maintained using a mix of the two. First one might desire to be extremely aggressive as in one might desire to go out and teach the international how and why to be non violent. as quickly as the international hears the message that is as much as everybody to maintain an entire life of easy passivity as to not create conflicts.
