depends what u call best when i needed to start our barbie cue last year i tiped lots of unleaded onto it, lighted a match standing at arms length while i droped it in there, almost burnt my hand off bcuz i used too much fuel but it got it goin easily enough and it wont burn out, you can try using just matches but i found that the wind blew it out several times before
id suggest you use something thats easily flammable but dont use too much, and dont tip it on while its goin coz my dad did that last year and set the grass on fire

Depends what you want to burn. Some fires start on their own.
To have a fire you need 3 things, air/oxygen, fuel and a heat source. Go from there.

if its a coal open fire- prepare hearth clear out any old ash from previous burnings.
use old rolled up sheets of newspaper to line the base of grate, any dry twigs or kindling if available- lay on a layer of coal
use commercially manufactured firelighters as stimulus to let all take hold when ignited! take care good luck!

roll paper up and lay in the base, then put thin strips of wood ,on top of that lay coal ,light the paper from the bottom and you will be warm in no time at al ,but to get it going you need air underneath ,so pul the plate out once its going put the plate back ,,,and add a little more coal dont put too much on all at once as this stops air flow and could kill it ,,,,build it up slowly
