Should African Americans celebrate the Forth of July? Why or why not?

African Americans generally are happy to celebrate Independence Day. It's a big non-religious holiday. The food is great. The weather (July 4) is almost always wonderful. We celebrate our identity as a people together, although we come from all over the world. We celebrate the Declaration of Independence, which contains arguably the most powerful sentence ever written:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

The American culture revolves around that sentence, and we are painfully aware that we, as a country, have not always lived up to those words. But that is the goal--the light at the end of the tunnel--and the hope and expectation is that one day everyone in America will be free of bigotry and class distinctions--free from anything that sets one person against another. For this reason, African Americans, especially, can celebrate Independence Day with joy, since they have experienced the worst of bigotry. They know better than most that the American experiment is a 'work in progress".

They should definitely celebrate the fourth of July! They are Americans celebrating an American holiday of independence and freedom. After going through such things as slavery, if anyone should celebrate freedom it is African-Americans!

No. you are wrong. Juneteenth was made to celebrate the last of the slaves being freed in Texas. Most of the slaves were free at the time. The ones in Texas simply didnt get the memo. By not celebrating fourth of July you denying our ancestors involvement in the creation of this country. There are many blacks in this country who put thier lives on the line to make this country what it is today.

Of course, yes... after all, they are americans too. Prejudice is very ugly. Americans are not only white but any human being that is born or live in the territory called america.
