It's called "text messaging" in the US...text for short. It was an initial marketing decision by the industry. Our phones were marketed as "cellular" phones rather than mobile phones.

Ummmm..... I am supposed to be answering ONLY USA questions, so how did you get on here ?
Cell is short for cellular -- it used to just be called a car phone--and I never even HEARD of "SMS" !!! (You also put "moblile" -- I think you meant "mobile"--only one letter "l" in that word)
"Short message service" sounds like a short message that could be left with an answering service, on voice mail, or left by way of a "text" message. We Americans differentiate between a voice mail message & one that is written (or sent via "text").
In what country do you reside ?

SMS stands for Short Messaging Service. I guess Americans found the analogy for SMS, which is text. "I'll text you!" instead of "I'll SMS you later" makes more sense right? :)

we're not different, we're behind in implementing latest technologies due to monopolies and influence of large telco's and complications. text message because we homis are still using pagers till date believe it or not so we're used to the term text. You can easily loose them when you start talking about 3G technology,MMS, mobile video telephony, etc.. to put it into perspective just compare American cars to EU or Jap ones.
