I ask because I tried to 'pick up' a muscly, big, hairy guy in a leather bar and he told me I shouldn't be there because I wasn't a 'bear'......

He actually said I was 'too petite' in stature, so it was not my attitude that was the 'problem "Indy T".
Funny how he liked me when I bought him a beer....

ROFLMAO!!
Too Funny! Having been in and around the bear community for quite a while, the only time I have seen any negative reaction toward someone who was attempting to ingratiate themselves into the group had to do with the attitude of the person, not the physical appearance of the person attempting to "get in". I've known skinny completely hairless guys that were not only accepted but dubbed a "mascot" of the group as well as a lesbian or two on occasion. I'd have to say, especially considering the answer to questions along this line much earlier, it's you, not them, that has a "problem".
And from your "rebuttal" I'd inform you that that particular line is often used as the brush off...but you wouldn't listen to that anyway. Someone has to be really obnoxious for many to turn down a free beer but it rarely buys you an "in" with someone who doesn't like you.
Bitter is as Bitter does.

I've never been certain of the answer to that question...The bear community from where I sit (sorta on the outside) seems like the most accepting of a lot of 'preference groups'..they don't seem to be too uptight about a lot of stuff.

The Bear community is a state of mind. The physical is just a personal preference. It also helps larger men find some form of self esteem in their size.

There isn't any requirements because there are different categories in the bear community.
There are chasers, otters, pandas, polar bears, etc. It's confusing and more complex than it needs to be.
Sounds like the guy wasn't interest, he didn't need to be rude about it.

I always thought furry guys of any weight were bears, but I could be confusing that with leather guys as well.

A lot of bears and chubs like skinny guys actually... "admirers" or "chasers" they're called. I hate them... because I'm a chub4chub. But some of them are hot and really nice... I'm not too picky. Until you steal my man... or something.
