There were 4 main causes of the Renaissance:
1) The Decline of the Power of the Church - When the old Pope died in the late 1300's, there were 2 claims made as to who was the next Pope; one in France and one in Italy. The people couldn't decide and evetually got fed up with listening to two differing words, as the 2 were never in agreement, and so began to do things for themselves. Humanism started becoming the main idea: Think for oneself.
2) Wealthy Patrons of the Arts - In Italy, which is the beginning of the Renaissance, mainly Florence, there were several large families of wealth and power, and they each wanted to out-do the others. So they were constantly hiring artists, sculptures, architects, and so on to create new and more elaborate items. These artists were able to paint great people and events that to this day help shed light on the happenings of that time period.
3) The fall of Constantinople - When the Muslim army finally invaded and took control of the capital city Constantinople in the Byzantine Empire, Christians were forced to flee back to Europe, bringing with them new ideas from the eastern world, and teachings from great books that had long been forgotten. This is where the idea of "re-birth" is seen; The ancient writings and texts that had been thought lost were suddenly being used again, virtually re-born into Western Europe.
4) The Printing Press - Johannes Gutenberg invented a machine that helped produce books and writings so much faster than before. Originally, texts were hand written, generally by monks of the Church. This was a long and tedious process that took time, so there were not many copies of books, like the Bible, floating around Europe. With the printing press, books were not only easier to make, therefore more could be made in a shorter time frame, but this made them more affordable. Everyone was able to buy books, read and learn for themselves, promoting the Humanist movement.

Renaissance means rebirth, the rediscovery of the classical civilisation, after the Dark Ages. These terms apply only to Western Europe, as the Byzantines never lost the contact and the Arabs quickly discovered it through conquering Byzantine - Ancient Greek territory (especially Alexandria).
The contact of West Europians with the Arabs in Spain, the opening of Byzantium towards West Europians for political reasons, the sack of Constantinople at 1204 AD and the departure of Byzantine scholars to Europe after the fall of Constantinople (1453 AD) plus some undouptfully brilliant minds made the rediscovery of the classical civilisation possible.

Here's just a few:
1. The Italians had to find something to do with all the paint they were producing.
2, Rich folks needed doorstops for their homes so they asked artisans to use the marble in their backyards to create them. A few got carried away.
3. The invention of the electric light bulb to bring them out of the Dark Ages.
4. The Black Plague got rid of all the people who could not read or write; the ones who survived were able to write books and make music without being called witches.
5. After America was discovered, the Europeans patterned their lives and cultures after the Algonquin Indians, natives of the northeast part of the country who had a civilization that dated back centuries. Their greatest achievement were building Manhattan island and the Pyramids of Hohokus, NJ.
6. The musical "Grease" was written by Danielo Zuko in Rome.
7. People actually went to "Starving Artists" sales and bought their work.

I hope this helps. Just print this out and give it to your teacher. I'm sure he or she will enjoy seeing a student who does thier own research.

The mugs behind the Roman Catholic Church were suffering serious image and credibility problems.

They needed serious marketing and public relations efforts to revitalise their image and retain market share.

They hired the best creative talent around.

People bought into it, and the Church was reborn.
