Street smarts can only extend so far, but the wealth of book smarts that can be mined is infinite.

if you know that $1+$1=$2, you serve me no purpose. If you can tell/show me how to make $2 from $1, then you are indispensable. You can double my money indefinitely, not just tell me how much money I have and how I acquired it, a $10 calculator can show me that without having to go through all the diagrams and charts.

Book smarts is only the beginning of intelligence. I know many people who excelled academically and hold an impressive resume of degrees, but these same book smart individuals can also be labeled "illiterate", (they readily admit this as well!), when it comes to street smarts. Those highly educated people have often commented that it would be the "whipped cream topping on the pie" if they had the same level of street smarts.

To compound ones book smarts with an equal level of street smarts is proof of our brain's lack of limits. What a true pleasure it is to be in the presence of an individual with both book and street smarts.....the best part is that those people are the ones who love to allow others to learn from them.

Never underestimate either level of intelligence. Each type of smarts can only enhance the other. Street smarts do not have a limited extension....no level of intelligence "can only extend so far". The extension is infinite, it depends on whether the individual continues to grow mentally, challenging him/herself to keep learning. What we DO with the knowledge is where the possibility of limits being placed on how far the smarts can extend to comes into play; the same limits of extension can be placed on book smarts as well.

And by the way, I found your question to be a terrific one. We should all take the time to think deep enough to even ponder such a comparison. Your question is a prime example of street smarts marrying book smarts!

It is an ongoing argument, isn't it?
I think the cliche came from the need for people to demonstrate more common sense.Street smart.
Book smarts cannot compensate for the ability to think critically with every day common sense.
I know many attorneys and doctors who can't change a flat tire, balance their checkbook, or do a simple odd job in their home, who lack a lot of common know-how about mechanical, electrical, automotive, and how these and other arenas operate. Anyone can read a book. Applying the knowledge to living is a whole otherstory. Wouldn't you rather be around someone with common sense than book trivia?

You do have to have a balance, though.
Book smarts can help you move to the future, while street smarts helps you get throught today.
I do agree about the wealth of book smarts. If somebody has done it before and written about it, you don't have to go through the same process to arrive at the same point. Kind of like inventing the wheel all over again.

Oh I agree! My husband works with a guy from NY who is King Hustler. I don't think he's ever cracked open a book, unless he was trying to selling it on the street to a homeless person as a coffee table.

They take pride in being street smart, but the joke is on them. They have no idea what they missing. The memories I have from books is great. Picture of Dorian Gray, Madame Bovary, Laura Ingles, The Hobbit... I'll take my "book smarts" any day. Leave the seedy side of life to others.

Street smarts you can't learn from a book. It usually comes with experience. Book smarts are good too. I think you need both to be a well rounded individual.

Book smarts are very much dependent on your genetics, how much patience you have, how you were raised, and anyone can have book smarts just by sitting at home reading all day. Street smarts aren't quantified, they aren't written down, they're almost given a mystical respect, especially in the popular film industry.

~Isn't it obvious and self-evident. Those who can, do. Those who can't fall back on "street smarts" Hey, why is this a problem for you? We need drones to keep the machines running. Let's keep that little secret between us, ok? Books is for nerds. I like being at the top of the food chain, and as long as the kiddies come to me and YahooAnswers for homework help, I'm gonna stay there. As long as I can direct traffic from my ivory tower, I don't need to be on the streets, and have no real desire to go there.
