Someone already said and i agree...We are encouraged to show our feelings nowadays...And therefor many wont hide tears but when they feel like crying they will cry....About the reality shows, well they are made to show peoples lives, and since in those you have normal average persons you can always find someone to relate to...Once you see that person having a hard time you can imagine yourself in that situation and it makes you feel kind of sad too...Most of people can...So that it should not be considered strange anymore...Only problem is that among so many tears that come out so easily, how can someone know which ones are honest ones?

One function of crying is a release of held tension, and as it is socially OK to cry publicly now; its a much used one. It is effective and helps you feel refreshed as well. I think maybe the problem is imagining it means any more than a yawn or a sigh or any other tension reducing gestures.
I imagine we could get into a strange knotty place if we started to introduce a hierarchy of what is OK crying and what is not.

I like this better than the stiff upper lip of my childhood which hid emotions from others and was protective without being open. I like to know when I am being emotionally protected.

Anything that's overused will devalue the currency so maybe we will have to start wailing like the banshee to denote the top end of grief and fainting with happiness to get back some equilibrium.

Ex-contestants claim that everything is magnified in the Big Brother house. It connects with something which I like to call "village syndrome". Village syndrome is where somebody makes everyday choices, but in a smaller-than-usual environment. This therefore leads them to find someone attractive, who they may not even have given a second glance to in the "outside world". They therefore begin to find familiarities within their surroundings. Generalisations, such as not liking someone because they remind one of a person they don't like, also start to appear.

By the same token, because major stresses are taken away (crime, money etc), the smaller things begin to count a heck of a lot more when in the confinement of the BB House. If a contestant is to fully submerse theirself in the BB "reality", they will not be constantly making comparisons with "outside world" issues or how they would tackle the same issues in the "outside world". Instead, what we'd see is someone reacting to their worst experiences within their new environment.

As for the "reality" talent shows, the excitement and overwhelming effect of achieving one's ambition would create a real surge of emotion in most human beings. I'm not surprised Leona kept crying on X-Factor - She was seeing her dream becoming a reality after years of hard work.

As for people in the "outside world", I don't think they can be kept in the same category as "reality" stars because their circumstances are diffeent.

Reality shows have nothing to do with reality. Those people are being manipulated for your "entertainment".

And while we're at it, you're being manipulated, too. It is part of a big smoke screen to keep the public interested in sex, possessions, celebrity and trivia. It stops you thinking about how hard you are working and how little control you have in your life.

This is now being seen in an increasing level of hysterical activity as people are kept in a state of fear and consumption.

We live in a society that encourages us to show our feelings more readily. So we'll be damned if we do cry and we'll be damned if we don't. So do we bring back the stiff upper lip or show tenacity and strength of character when things are getting us down. Mind you we most of cry when we laugh...so what's the answer?

Yes I agree with the above I also cry when I see injustice and wee children mauled to death by dogs that are kept as domestic pets. 'You have go to have heart' as the song goes

reality shows and dramas make them cry cuz they tend to relate what they see to their own lives. some people are basically sensitive to others lives and feelings. but the main reason for their tears is how real everything looks. and its like viewing their lives from a third person's point of view.
