Love! Too many people seem to be bitter because they lack the dedication to make it work. It's hard work but then life is never supposed to be easy. It's like anything you do in life, you get out what you put in.

Been there done that myself, and failed, but I still think that marriage can provide a nice warm secure structure for people to nurture each other and to grow in. The idea of marriage isn't bad, but people make a mess of it.
And, it prevents people from just fooling around with sex without having real feelings for each other.

The point? Do you mean its value? Its significance? Its necessity? What?
If two people really love one another - and that means standing by one another in good times and bad - then a piece of paper, vows and rings aren't necessary to "validate" the strength and depth of their relationship.
There are some legal considerations and tax considerations, but other than that, its just a convention, but also another kind of "committment" between two people in love.

originally a social and religious institution, marriage contracts 2 people as husbands and wives, committed to each other, and legitimizes them to consummate their relationship (love or no love... they're still husband and wife) and build a family together.
not to sound like a puritan, but if you're into premarital sex, live with your boyfriend/girlfriend or have a kid with them, then no point in getting married (well... there are the financial advantages. and green cards).

Marriage is the economically sound way to muddle through this world while you wait for the sweet release of death.
Love is grand. Divorce is 20 grand ;-)

From theHoly Bible, Book of Genesis Chapter 2
18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.
22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said,
"This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called 'woman, '
for she was taken out of man."
24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
