The only recourse is for people to be active in process, by taking the time to inform themselves and then vote accordingly. Further Congress needs to move to take swift and decisive action against any scandalous activity by it's members. Unfortunately history has shown us that neither of these situations is a likely reality. Personally, I do not vote based on the party system. I vote for individuals based on record and platform. While my lone actions may not reform the system as a whole I can at least know that I have done my part for the effort.

It is called campaigning for the opposition. Term limits are a stupid idea that people think will stop politicians from gaining too much power. The truth is we have always had term limits, it is called the election process.
If you think that a politician is corrupt, incompetant or just no good, work on getting the other guy elected. If the election is too far off, start a petition of recall. It worked in California to remove Arnold's predecessor.

Good question! How do we wake up America? As long as they have their toys and a reasonable amount of freedoms that they take for granted then most could care less who is running the show. since America seems to be becoming more obese or kind of pudgy maybe when the government goes as far as having the "fat police" roaming around McDonald's and Wendy's with their bull horns taking peoples food away for their own good. That just might frost them enough to take action. I mean I can just see it now two patrolmen dressed in khaki shorts and tank tops yelling into their mega phones HEY YOU PORKY IN THE PINK SPANDEX PUT THE WHOPPER DOWN AND WALK SLOWLY AWAY FROM THE TABLE! Then they give them a ticket for over consumption of a artery clogging substance. And I know having to spend the time going to court to pay the fine and miss their soaps on tv just might be enough motivation.

Because all we do is complain about it. Do something about it or even better offer a solution. This last year I got involved with my party, and I found out that the problem is that there really aren't any good alternatives, or at least they don't stand a chance because we aren't willing to put forth effort into seaking them out to solve the problem.

People should not vote for political thugs so that they cannot assume power.
