I'm ready for all these dumb "is America ready..." questions to end. It is 2007, not 1961.
Like I say to everyone who asks questions in this tired old train of thought. It depends on his/her idealogy, not who's smoking who's wang.

OK...OK...now, child, we need us a black man and then a woman 1st before we go letting those bad homosexuals in office. LOL, just kidding! We can't even get this country to let gays legally marry when they are some of the most stable relationships I have witnessed. America will not vote for an openly gay person into the office of the President!

No....not really. Some areas of the country have elected openly gay Senators, Congressmen, etc, but a Presidential hopeful has to appeal to a whole cross-section of Americans. Remember, while most younger voters wouldn't care, most voters are middle-aged or older. I personally wouldn't care, provided I agreed with his plans for America.

If the gay candidate believes in interpretting the Constitution according to the original understanding of the document, then there'll be a better chance than if he/she believes that the Constitution is a "growing, organic" thing. If the candidate declares her/his clear understanding that, to our Founding Fathers, the usual word to describe homosexuals was "sodomites," and that the Founders -- and the proposers and ratifiers of the 14th amendment -- obviously never meant for there to be "equal rights for sodomites," then there's a chance. If he/she promises that his/her appointees to the courts feel the same way, then he/she might be acceptable.

In other words, a conservative gay (like me) stands a better chance than a .................................. Barney Frank.

I hope.

Not quite yet. Maybe in the next 40-50 years but who knows. I would recommend running or office in the closet and then coming out after the auguration but you know that would float with some of the folks.

if the candidate is well qualified and seems like they would do a great job, i would have no problem at all voting for a gay president.

Personally, I don't CARE what someone does in the privacy of their own bedroom. So, straight or gay, stick to the issues at hand & leave private life just that -- private ! ! !

Some are, overall, no.

I'd be cool with it, but we have a few other hurdles to pass first. Women presidents, minority presidents will come first.

While considering your question, consider the interwoven element of religion in this country's government.
