I have a dwarf lop bunny that lives in my room. He is in a cage but is allowed out to run around the room everyday. My best friend has just gone away on a holiday and I am looking after her two pet rats for the next two weeks and just after she left I noticed that on one of the rats both of his ears were red and scabby, I think it may be mites. My friend has metioned that she has treated him for mites before. Considering that they are staying in the same room as my bunny I was wondering if mites can be transferred from the rat to my little baby bun bun? And if so, how would that happen? Is it in the air or tranferred by touch? I have been washing my hands with antiseptic before picking up my bunny so as not to infect him.

If anyone has any idea about this please answer for the sake of my sweet little bunny!!!!!!!!!!

Mites are transferred very easily and if they're sharing space your rabbit will likely pick them up.

Usual treatment for rabbits is shots of Ivermectin by the vet, from memory it's 3 all up, or Revolution for kitten on the back of their neck. I've had a lot of success with Revolution, usually one treatment does the trick even with persistent ear mite. Don't use Frontline, make sure it's Revolution and kitten strength.

According to this article Revolution can be used on rats too

Be sure of what you're treating before you do though.

Mites can be transferred from anything with fur to anything else with fur. Your rabbit can definitely become affected by them. It's an infestation that's transferred by touch, but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to keep their cages in opposite corners while the ratties visit you. And keep up that handwashing: it's what will keep your rabbit the safest!

Meantime, if you want to treat the rats, you can use vaseline or mineral oil to 'drown' the mites. This won't harm the animals' hearing, but is a pretty effective way to take care of the mites.
