Mousepads generally come with 3 buttons, centre, right and left. These work exactly the same as the buttons/wheel on a standard mouse. On my laptop, I can configure the buttons like on a mouse, but I have to admit, I still prefer using a mouse and have a wireless optical one running off a USB port.

If it's only got 1 button it's a mac.
Also if you load the driver for your scratpad mouse you can probably set tap zones to do other things... mine is set to accept a tap in the top right corner (about 1/4 inch square) to be a right click and to assume if you scroll or drag to any edge then the mouse pointer keeps on going.
I can even set a 'middle button' zone if I want to pretend that I've got a 3-button mousepad. Or a 'windows' key tapzone.

As above, but I'd recommend using a mouse if you are using it on a table or desk. The pads on laptops are OK if you really are using it "on the move", but not for normal use. Personally, I'd get an optical scrolling one and wired - I really can't see the point of cordless mice - just how far away from the screen and keyboard are you going to be?
