Attracting wildlife to my garden?

I want to make my garden more nevironmentally friendly this year and attract more wildlife (in UK)

does anyone have any good tips?

Get rid of cats - if you want to attract birds.

Have plenty of plants and trees for insects and birds to enjoy.

Get a book out of the library.

Hang up bird feeders out of reach of cats and rats.

Know your friends and foe re insects and others in the garden.

Plant flowers that insects are attracted to - know that Roses often get covered in green fly etc. but if you too have a lot of ladybirds that will take care of the problem.

Marigolds, calendula, lavender sunflowers lots of flowers will be attractive to wildlife.

Have a corner with dead logs and a good compost heap then you may attract a hedgehog who will take care of the slugs and snails that may be a problem eating up your best plants and your new grown lettuce.

What I did was bought a pond with water feature and put it at the bottom of my garden and have basically let so much of the ground go "to waste" ie let the weeds etc grow of their own accord. I also bought a bird station and hung up bird feeders. I now get alot of birds in the garden and the odd squirrel and fox. I got some of my ideas from watching Springwatch with Bill Oddie. Install a pond that will attract the type of insects animals feed on. Dont prune hedges during the nesting seasons (april-march, july and august)
Keep areas of your garden unkempt, corners or borders thick with natural undergrowth of weeds and wild flowers. Place dead wood and logs, stone piles and other areas that animals and insects can make their home.
