Urethane in most cases will provide more protection when it's applied correctly , in terms, apply very thin coats allowing proper time for drying . Then sand and wipe with tact cloth and continue these steps until ending up with at least 5 or more coats. You will find urethane holds up against sun rays and friction such as walking on much better than lacquer.

For durability and protection use urethane but if you want beauty it's lacquer by far. Steel wool between a couple of coats and ya got a beauty..

Urethane is a plastic and therefor more durable. Lacquer is appealing to woodworkers because of the "melting quality" it has from one layer to another, speed of aplication, and the ability to "mod" the mixture to obtain a desired finish.
