....and?.....

If you read the rules th this forum, It's:

-5 points to ask a question,
+2 points to answer a question,
+3 points to choose a "Best Answer" to the question you have asked,
+10 points to be chosen as a "Best Answer".

(BTW, Thanks for the 2 points)

At it's simplest level, because that's how it's meant to work.

If you click on the number that shows your level (next to your avatar, on the home page), you'll get a breakdown of point costs and awards. Notice that if you select a "Best Answer" for your question, you'll get 3 of your 5 points back. If you leave it up to voting, and the majority of the voters vote "No Best Answer" you get all 5 points back. No penalty for an unanswered/poorly answered question, assuming folks vote that way (they won't).

Why are you charged any points to ask a question? Because it promotes participation. If you have to have points to spend in order to get your questions answered, then you're going to have to go out and answer other folks' questions to earn that "currency." If questions were free (or if you were awarded points for asking them) why would anyone answer questions? What would stop folks from posting a 100 pointless questions a day?

The other reason you are "penalized" by asking a question is to encourage people to search the Answers archive to see if their question has already been asked and/or answered. More hits for Yahoo!

Happy questioning (and answering)!

What's even more fun is if you build yourself up to a new level and then ask a question and get bumped back down to the level where you suddenly find yourself unable to participate anymore that day. Happened to me the first few days of being on this site. We laaaaughed...

It takes 5 points off for every question asked. But yeah, that's pretty stupid.
