I will be flying with my baby boy to Canada next month. Since there is no direct flight from Malawi, we will have to connect to Johannesburg and Amsterdam and finally Toronto. He is fed formula and i am not sure what to do. How do i keep his food. My worry is do i need to carry boiled water or i should prepare a couple of bottles but how do i keep them chilled. Your help would be appreciated.

Simply ask your flight attendent to refridgerate your formula. You can arrange to do this before you get on the plane, call your airline. They can also warm your formula when you need to feed your baby. Also calling in ahead of your flight with your special needs could allow you to board first.

When you fly, make sure he is sucking on something, a pacifier or bottle, when the plane is taking off and landing. It will prevent his little ears from popping and possibly causing him discomfort, and will also prevent an unwanted outburst of tears from your little one when the popping occurs. As far as formula goes.... why cant you take it already measured (powder only) in each bottle, and take a gallon jug of nursery water from Wal-Mart? If he is 8 months old, he should be taking more than just a bottle unless he has health issues and your pediatrician has told you differently. Take along some non messy finger foods that he can enjoy like cheerios, or the wagon wheels made for babies his age ( from wal mart), or even oyster crackers. Bring something new he hasnt tried, yet. Have plenty of wipes within arms reach because you will need them for a variety of reasons during your trip. If he has never experienced finger snacking yet, then this would be a great day to start, as it will be new and occupy his mind for a bit. There really is no need to worry over chilling bottles if you measure the powder only and seal the bottles, then pour the water when the need arises. Room temperature bottles would relax him a bit, where a colder bottle will only revive some. Trust me.. you want as much relaxation from him as possible. You can even ask your pediatrician if he/she could recommend a safe method of 'induced relaxation'. I definately would watch his sugar intake for 24 hours prior. Then, you have even fewer eating times to worry about. Good luck.

the flight attendants will be more than happy to keep them in the refrigerator for you. I would bring some water jin a water tight jug just in case.

your best bet is tinned, ready to serve formula, and you might have to buy it at the airport. Make sure he has lots of water, or his soother if he takes one because the air pressure in the plane can cause him pain and discomfort.
