I find myself worrying over little things and thinking about them all the time, things like my carpet is dirty shoulds be an insignificant thing but it stresses me out to the point where I can't go in the room with the light on, I have to eat my dinner in the dark.
Why am I getting obsessed with unimportant things?

You're thinking about too many things at the same time. You're a worrier and can't help worrying about stuff. Talk to someone about this. If you start to be stressed about the carpet being dirty and being obssessed about it, walk away from it.

Don't think about anything. Think happiness and things that make you happy and smile just thinking about it. Eating dinner in the dark doesn't really help your problem.

Do something that makes you happy. Go for walks in the park or scream at the sea (if you get there without difficulties). Don't care about anything except that you have to de-stress yourself or make yourself less miserable.

If you're still thinking that the carpet is dirty, clean it. Note that you've clean it and let it be. Stop thinking about it after the cleaning.

I suffered from depression in the past and my way of coping was to clean (similar to OCD), and why some people have eating disorders. Since then I have studied Psychology and tried to learn why people do this. It is so they can have some sort of control in their lives. I still get like it now sometimes, stressing over holding heavy shopping bags on the bus so people don't tread on them and rip them, then I get annoyed that I am holding them!!!
It is possible that you may have experienced something in the past that has made you feel vulnerable or you have let people walk over you.
If you don't feel ready to talk to a doctor yet try to find someone that you can chat to to see if this helps. Also St Johns Wort's is available from any health store and is good for depression, or Bach's Rescue Remedy is good for calming you down.
I am here if you want to chat.

Sounds to me like you have OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Don't put it off, see your GP and ask to speak to someone (either in a group or one to one).
There must be something that has triggered this or maybe an overload of stress through work/emotional conflict etc.
Things will work themselves out. Try to relax and accept the little quirks you have for the meantime and try to resolve them one by one.
May take a while but it's not like you're doing anything dangerous to yourself or others, so don't panic.

It's called OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder. I used to start out using a hand-held vacuum cleaner to pick up dirt by my front door, but then found myself cleaning my entire house with the hand-held vacuum. Watch "Monk" on tv, and you'll understand...and know that you're much better off than some.

Hi were your parents too obsessed with the home being too spotless or clean? My mother was and I worried every second about mine when I got married. I have since realised that there is more to cleaning Listen to the message and try to relax!!!! The cleaning will get done, relax!!!!! The more you relax the more our bodies can deal with this!!!!!

I'm afraid I am no expert but I know that when I am stressing over small irrelevant things, its because in the back of my mind there is something larger that I am not dealing with. Problems at work or with a relationship. For me at least, if I'm avoiding a problem it seems to blow other smaller things out of proportion.

I hope this helps

I get like this sometimes. The cure is to tidy up. once the house is clean you can relax again. It'll only take an hour or so, so put on some good tunes and get lost in it all. You'll feel better afterwards, hopefully. Good luck

Maybe because your were beaten as a child, mocked as a ugly duckling at school, grew up and became a promiscuous whore, started shooting heroin, got kicked out of college, did time in the pen for embezzlement. You need a bowl of Campbell's glow in the dark clam chowder.
