You will always have hungry people and overfed fat wasteful people,
it's what we are,
but we can do something about it.
instead of eating an extra cake/bit of food,
save the monies, and give to the poor.
I know that I will get some stick for that comment, but you must do something if you want to change things.

According to the official statistics, no. While having homelessness and malnurishment is hard to accept in a society that has tons of billionnaires, and could afford to do more, to care more, to tax more, the USA is not alone in having a large gap between rich and poor.
Official statistics for the 1980's, 90's & 00's have put only South American and African countries (Brazil, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Chile,...) in the top ten most uneven, and Europe and Japan in the evenest 10.
Look up Gini Index or "percentage of income earned by the top 20%" on Google and select any imf/oecd/ibrd/undp links you may find .... in the mean time, I wish there was a way to make our society more caring, more nurturing, more nice, but the strong political influence of the rich and arguments about state benefits being a disincentive to finind work remain undefeated in Congress for now.

Absolutely- it is not only immoral to see another human being eating from a trash can- it is a permanent stain on humanity.
I have seen people eating from the trash (NY, Chicago)- and I have gone and asked if they wanted some food and gone and bought it (you've never seen a happier man), I have bought bums coffee when they were asking for change for it, black or white, sane or not.
I simply couldn't believe everyone else just turned away as if it were unreal.
And not treating patients because of Health Insurance- and the US dares call other nations savages.
Nowhere else does this happen. Even in India, a hospital will at least attempt minimal care.
I have seen in the 3rd world, not a single person treated with such laothing, contempt and inhumanity as a poor person in America.
With extreme sadness, I admit I see that now in my native UK and I hate it- it smacks of insensitivty, ungratefulness for one's lucky stars and lack of compassion for one's fellow man.
It is absolutley bloody disgraceful. There is no excuse and none can be made
I think that many Americans are simply unwilling to face the rality that there are massive poverty & wealth distribution issues and FORCE these plutocrats to give something back to the society which gave them their wealth.
It IS criminal to have more money than you could ever spend- it is called GREED.

First of all, I don't believe that "one in eight" New Yorkers have nothing to eat. I don't even believe that one in a thousand doesn't.
Regardless, if it weren't for these fat b*stards, who are generally the ones who own or manage multi-million dollar companies that employ millions upon millions of people worldwide, the actual percentage of those who "have nothing to eat" would be much higher.
To how many employees does a homeless guy have to guarantee a paycheck?

Wealth is generated by work. Nobody in America is starving with bloated bellies, nor has any adult ever starved to death in New York in the last 100 years.
You just want someone else to work for your food. The US census clearly found that the largest determining factor in income was not race or religion, but WORK.
The more individuals that work in any household, the more that household has.
Race isn't even factor in wealth anymore. Immigrants, including black immigrants from Africa, are three times as likely to find work as the lazy minorities that blame race for everything and listen to Snoop Dog.
There are so many jobs available here and in New York that they run across our borders by the thousands trying to get them.
Are you telling me that someone from Mexico, who doesn't even speak English can find and keep a job and you cannot?
Stop blaming others for what is clearly your failure to WORK.
Even the poorest in America have color television, gas heat, a computer and a higher standard of living than the poor anywhere else.
Go to Africa and you'll see REAL poverty. Anyone poor in America is poor because they refuse to break a sweat.

Not sure your statistics are accurate, but most homeless people will refuse jobs when given offered to them. Oprah offered some homeless people free clothes and jobs. All took the clothes none took the jobs. They just had a documentary where the filers gave a homeless man 100 grand. He spent it all in 6 months and is homeless again. Asked why he didn't have a financial counselor help him he stated that he didn't trust anyone, and where did they think they had any right telling him what to do with his money? Get a job. If you want work I would help you find it. If your trying I will do everything I can to help you. If you want a handout, starve I really don't care

No it is the American Dream. Anything's possible in the states. If you have a country where only money counts for anything, you will get situations like this.
New York is rather an extreme example, though. In the USA the poor are EVERYWHERE. You don't notice them at first but there are millions of them.

You want uneven wealth distribution? Go to China, go to Russia. There the poor are trying to get ahead, not at home, watching TV, drinking cheap wine and malt liquor, smoking crack and Kools and collecting welfare.
America is the land of opportunity. You do, however, have to get off your fat butt and do something about it.

There are worse in other countries. Much worse. In many 3rd world countries, the rulers live in conditions that would embarrass Bill Gates while the masses starve. N Korea comes to mind as do several Arab societies. That said, hunger & malnutrition, especially for children, is a national disgrace.
