The SHORTEST route would be to take the A1 all the way to Central London, crossing the Thames at (or near) The City and then taking the road south via Kennington, Brixton, the A23 and M23 - don't forget to pay your congestion charge to that nice Mr Ken!

My preferred route would be take either the M25 (or North/South Circular, depending where in North London you are starting from) and then pick up the A23/M23 just south of Coulsdon.

Do you really want the shortest route?!! The shortest route would mean getting into the heart of London. I think what you want might be the quickest route. Depending on your position in north London, you most probably would have to get out to M25 and drive around London until you get to Exit 7 where you have to get south on M23. You drive on this motorway to the end of it close to Crawley where it turn to A23. This route should take you to Brighton. From Southgate, for example, it would take you a little more than one and a half hours.

I travel from brighton to holloway north london regularly. The shortest way would be to drive straight to the top of the m23 and throught the city. But that takes longer and you have to pay the congestion charge. I come off the m23 onto the m25 heathrow bound. You come on at junction 7 and come off at junction 16 a40. (make sure you take the second a40 exit). That will take you straight into north london.

Just realised you want to go from london to brighton. Sorry...reverse those directions
