I'm pretty sure he did. He was injured quite a bit his first couple of seasons. Kubiak got a few starts. I lived in Denver in '85 to '87. A lot of people weren't fans of his at that time. In fact, most called him "Smelway" or "Elliemay" because he would get hurt a lot and he wasn't very effective. He soon got over his injury problems and the rest was history.

Elway did play his rookie year with the Broncos, he was drafted number 1 by the Baltimore Colts 1983 but demanded to be traded or threatened to play baseball. He played the first game of the season against the Steelers on Sept 4th but was pulled a few games later because he sucked(October 9th), he then played behind Steve Deberg until he was injured (4 games).

Yes, he "STARTED his rookie year for the Broncos". But he wasn't originally drafted by Denver.

"Bio: John Elway was a legend even before he stepped onto the field. Elway was lucky enough to be one very few athletes to be drafted into two professional sports. Elway was selected by the Balitmore Colts and then immediately traded to the Denver Broncos in the 1983 NFL draft, . . He also was drafted by the New York Yankees in the baseball draft."

This, according to "NFL Legends" website:
