In a capitalist society, like most in the world, the means of production and communication is privately owned and those who are government funded are getting more and more privatised. What will happen is , those who owned both communication and production will dictate what the masses will hear or get. This means the choices will deteriorate. For example, imagine, there are only 4 companies who owned tv channels or networks. Those 4 will essentially dictate what you can or should watch by limiting it's content and also editorializing their news to suit the mindset of the owners. And newsworthiness will take a new meaning. Another thing is, and you can already see signs of this, private ownership entails that one can buy out the other for a price, as everything has a price. So taking the example of the 4 tv stations, one can buy the other one and so forth until only one tv station remains with only one sole owner. This is what most big companies do , like Disney and GM in the US, they buy off small markets and take over existing companies by killing of or in this case buying over the competition. All in all, it's not good for consumers as we will screwed when it comes to choices, pricing, content and so forth.

What happens is just the opposite of communism. Open competition, free enterprise, the American way. You are free to buy from the best dealer. The best dealer competes for your business by offering lower prices or more or better services. The U.S. govt. is (theoretically) not in a 'business'. It's about choices and how to best spend your hard earned money. The thought of "being owned by all" is the harp played by communism. Seductive sounding, but away out of tune, The plague of communism is that you can own nothing. You must be grateful to the communist government that you can even buy bread. But since there is only one kind of bread, everybody must eat it or do without. It doesn't matter if the bread isn't prepared right, or is stale as a brick. You must be happy to have ANY bread to buy. When there is no competition, you have no choice in any matter. You can't go to a neighboring town and buy better bread because they can only sell the bread the govt. allows them to sell.

People are more motivated by profit and the opportunity to accumulate and grow capital. When the dictatorship of the proletariat controls the means of production, stagation, lack of innovation, decreased productivity, corruption and shortages result.
