Fill a cup with warm water from the faucet. Sprinkle a tea spoon of salt in it and stir. Gargle with the salt water (brine). Do it repeatedly until you've used up the water from the entire cup. Swallow the last mouthful (rather than gargling) so that your throat is coated with salt as far down as possible.
The salt kills the sore throat germs. Tests conducted in medical labs revealed that when a grain of salt is dropped into a culture, the germs scatter like there's no tomorrow. They can't stand salt.
Everytime I get a sore throat (not often) I gargle with salt water, and start getting relief right away. The problem is gone completely in 24 hours or less.
The secret ingredient is the salt. It's great medicine. Gargle as often as you feel like it. Every couple of hours or so is fine. Remember to swallow a mouthful completely every so often. That will ensure that your throat is coated with salt as far down as possible and kill as many germs as possible.
Relief is quick, guaranteed, and cheap.

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

It could be that the glands in your throat are up. The pain will go away in a few days, so don't despair! Best thing to do is to drink a lot of hot water with honey and some lemon juice in. Its really soothing and will help clear whatever it is thats made your throat grumpy!

Try honey and fresh ginger juice, boiled in water. Let him take a few sips every few hours. (Don't ask me for the proportions, as my wife makes it). It really works on sore throat.
