Nextonoth... has a valid point about the family supporting women and orphans after wars, but I do not agree with his interpretations:
- if this tradition was born ages back in turbulent times, when the survival of the group was at stake - I do not understand why it continues to persist in countries which have not been in war for centuries.
- if men and women are equal in Islam, then rich women should be allowed to have more than one husband.
- as both men and women are allowed to work, they should have equal chances to become rich. The the rich woman could have a marriage contract with the man's family, etc.
- why do rich Muslims in some Muslim cultures marry young teenage girls? Isn't this making teenage sex legitimate? The difference with the Western cultures is that at least the teenagers get to choose their partner.
- and last, but not least: What about love? People are not just "human units", combined on the basis of social status. Sometimes they do get along well, but very often they don't.
I think that having more than one wife increases the husband's chance to find somebody he can actually live with. The woman does not stand a chance though.
Its not all about "feeding each other well", is it?

Oh gee! Thats easy if you just think about it.
Lets ay your in a country where wars come and go constantly for 2-3 thousand years. If the pagans come and kill all the beleivers in God them their numbers will be small. If that happens they can no longer defend the group. If they are unable to replace dead fighters then the enemy will genocide them all and their religion will also cease to exist. GOT THAT?
Now, if you have a single rich man he can easily support many other adults and children. Includeing orphans. So it spreads wealth when a man has several wives. your not going to have an accumulation of wealth createing a big class gap. So primarily polygamy is seen as a form of welfare or charity upon the group. We see it as a mercy from God -not to be without a family and a spouse. The women who are divorced or who are widows or even old are not left to fend for themselves with not protection . obviously in islam there is no welfare. The family unit is the welfare. This we see all around as trajedy. For example women forced into degradeing circumstances due to invasions, famine,dictatorships, poverty ect. It is important in Islam that no humans be degraded because this is not the natural position of humans as Allah has created them to be. So In islam we do not accept adaptations such as prostitution, trafficing , putting small infants in daycare because there is no husband, illegitimacy for money and such things. All these things bring poverty to the entire society. So Islam has a way for the society to take care of many women who would otherwise not have a husband or a home of their own. and that is by allowing men who can afford to do so support more than one wife. These wives are all held as equals.There is no predatory sex in Islam , we don't allow for example the pick-up bar or teen sex or date rape. All marriages are contracted with parents or a womans protector. People know whats going on! Marriage in islam is a socio-economic contract. The man MUST support his wife and children. So she automatically gets that advantage over sure destitution in times of war. Islam understands that war makes women and children suffer and we have a way to deal with that -we take them in.
In the US people have an average of 11 lovers, live-ins or marriages by age 45. Muslims are not doing that. Our marriages are honorable and they function to help individuals, not exploit them.
Recovering the population after a war is definitely prefferable to being taken as a slave and the land looted. In many countries now children are destitute and unsupervised roaming the streets because their mothers must work and there is no father . Islam does not accept this at all! Considering the various genocidal wars being waged on Muslims today I would guess that polygamy is going to be more likely as a survival option for the Muslim ummah. We are all one people. So the extended polygamous family in itself is a symbol of group solidarity, not individualism.

it states in the islamic holy book that the profit mohammed had more then several wives. Because mohammed is viewed just like how jesus is views to christians they follow his way of life.
