I have black cloth seat covers in my car and I've just noticed faint white stains on the surface, left either from sweat or rain water that has since dried up. What is the best way to clean these stains out?

This is a common problem that is most often caused by the salt in perspiration. It can, however, be caused by water that has high chemical content (very hard water). To clean the cloth start by vacuuming it. Then take an upholstery brush (or any moderately stiff brush, and while vacuuming the second time, brush the white areas vigorously. This should remove most of the stain. Next, use a quality car upholstery cleaner – there are many excellent brands available at your auto parts store. Follow the directions – making sure that the interior of the car is not overly hot or cold. Also make sure that you will not need to drive the car until the seats are completely dry. If you sit on the seats while the cleaner is still moist, the cleaner may actually remove the dirt form your clothes and bed it into your freshly cleaned seats. NOTE: Consider a second treatment with some spray on Scotch Guard. It's cheap and easy, and really makes a difference.

are you talking factory or aftermarket?

factory, you can get a carpet cleaner with upholstery attachments to take care of it, (if you have one or know someone that does) or you can use the foam upholstery cleaner that's sold for cars (2-4 bucks a can)

if they're aftermarket, just take them off and soak them in hot water for an hour, then use a rag or brush to get rid of any stains and let them hang/drip dry

And if you want an actual answer, rather than than "buy a different car"...

...the spray-on foaming shampoo you can buy from car shops or supermarkets or wherever is quite good. Spray it on, wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry.
