As the others have said, somebody paid by any branch of the government. From the department of roads to the President.
An employee at retail store is the "public face" of the corperation, but the corperation is in the private sector.

Someone who works for Govt organizations. Such as places like: Salvation Army, the Post Office, Federal jobs, City Jobs.

If you work for any level of the government, you are a public employee. Police, firefighters, school employees. Any branch of government at all. (I was a Custodian for a school district for 10 years.)

A public employee is some one that works for the State, county, city or country..a police officer, fireman, probation officer, mayor, city council, gov. and any one that works with them..secretary, bus driver, parks and rec people, janitors, limo drivers, security people, etc
